January 16 (Renewables Now) - Portugal plans to become one of the top green hydrogen producers in Europe with a major renewable gases project in Sines municipality, local media report.

The government estimates that up to EUR 1.6 billion (USD 1.8bn) will be invested in the green hydrogen project in Sines over the next decade, Portuguese news agency Expresso said last week.

The topic was discussed by the minister for the environment and energy transition, Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes, at a parliamentary hearing focused on the 2020 State Budget.

The minister said the country is looking to invest in this particular sector in view of the planned closing down of Energias de Portugal SA's (ELI:EDP) coal-fired power plant in 2023, thus transitioning Sines to a major renewable energy centre.

At the same hearing, Matos Fernandes announced plans to hold a new solar auction this quarter to contract between 700 MW to 800 MW of new capacity.
